We are introduced right away to Yuuichirou Hyakuya who is brought to an orphanage at the very young age of eight after being severely abused and traumatized by his parents. Unfortunately being abused or left behind all together seems to be a common theme of all of the children in the Hyakuya orphanage itself. Initially what is given about Yuuichirou is that he is a very prickly, unkind, and more than defensive child.
He is seen to never agree with the principle of what it means to become livestock for the vampires. He's often disgruntled at the fact he has to give up his own blood against his will very early on in the series. He very openly disagrees with Mikaela on selling his blood to the vampire noble, Felid, picking one too many fights about it.
But all of what is initially seen is a defense mechanism, as would be the case of any child who was traumatized at a young age. Yuuichirou is certainly not naturally a prickly and unkind person. In fact, Yuuichirou is a very affectionate and loving person. He is a person who craves acceptance and validation because he never got any of those things from his parents. Mikaela, his best friend, is shown being the one to really reach out to Yuuichirou at first and to really give him what someone needing him feels like. He certainly sees it as Mikaela wanting him which is what he wants ultimately. He wants to be wanted and needed. Family is a strange concept to Yuuichirou having come from an abusive home. He initially doesn't know what a family is and rejects the idea of family all together. It takes Felid killing that very group of orphans and fatally wounding Mikaela to actually bring to light in his mind what he would consider a family. It even takes him that long to admit outloud that he even considered them family. To have such a thing ripped away from him for a second time would just further the trauma that he already suffered.
Friends are also sort of a weird thing for him as it operates sort of in the same sense as family. Guren forces him to attend a normal highschool during a suspension for disobeying orders, and that his goal is to make a friend. Yuuichirou claims that he doesn't need friends. Essentially he has reverted back to the little child at the orphanage who didn't know what a family was. It's clear that he doesn't have a concept of what bonds are between people and he's trying to drive everyone away from getting close to him. But it certainly isn't that he doesn't want people close to him. It really boils down to the fact that he is afraid that he will lose everyone important to him a second time.
Despite all of that, Yuuichirou is able to make a friend in both Yoichi and Shinoa, who end up becoming his teammates later on.
With this in mind consider Yuu's next path. Revenge. He's angry and bitter about what Felid did to his family, he'll do absolutely anything to get revenge on the entire race of vampires. He essentially does the same as Mikaela who sold his blood for the family, he promises to do anything it takes to kill the vampires. Promising his life to Guren, who becomes much like a father figure to him. It is important to note that Yuuichirou knows that Guren and the Demon Army are using him. He is driven by that hope that he will be able to take his revenge for his lost family that he doesn't care.
To further emphasize on what revenge and family mean to Yuu there is a certain scene where he is allowed to take the plunge and challenge one of the cursed weapons. He chooses a sword by the name of Asuramaru. What demons typically do is pull from your inner most desires and that is exactly what happens. Yuuichirou is immediately thrown into an illusion of his family. He was very believing of it for the most part until one thing happens- Mikaela and the orphans all spout revenge from their lips. His view on family and revenge is extremely separate. Revenge is what Yuuichirou wants, and for a demon to taint the image of his family is entirely unacceptable. This is where it gives you the message that while yes Yuuichirou is focused on revenge he is also going to value a family bond over any sort of revenge. Another example of this is a little girl that misleads the team because vampires were holding her family hostage. Rather than fuss at her for lying he praises her for doing the right thing to keep her family safe.
Working as a team is often something that he struggles with. It doesn't matter if one gives him a new family or not, you absolutely cannot force him to work as a team at all time. Of course he has the ability to when he finds it to be the best course of action. But if there is something Yuuichirou finds more important he is more likely to go to extremes. He really isn't the most intelligent in his entire squad and the most likely to act rash under difficult situations. Seen in one of the more recent chapters where he refuses to leave Guren behind in the clutches of the vampires. His determination to do what he feels is right will always be what drives him.
Despite all of this there is another side to Yuuichirou Hyakuya. When his defenses finally drop there seems to be a completely different person inside. He's kind, loving, and hard-headed kind of kid. This is seen for the most part when he gets the time to be with his team, who Guren told him would be his new family. They have antics anywhere from teasing one another to ultimately taking the blame for one another when they're late to getting to a location. Yuuichirou genuinely cares about every single one of them, which was always the case. Yuuichirou down to the core wants to be loved, and he wants to love other people.
It is also worthy to mention that Yuuichirou did not become a victim of his circumstances. He suffered severe abuse before going to the orphanage, witnessed the end of the world, and then ended up losing people he considered his family. He admits to Guren that living absolutely hurt him, he had nightmares and felt guilty about abandoning everyone. He lives on with the hope that one day he could possibly rebuild what he used to have. This hope is brought out even more after he discovers that Mikaela is alive and is the only other living member of his old family.
At the end of the day this is what makes Yuuichirou himself. These are his core traits. His personality is consistent through out the series. He always remains true to himself and for what he believes in. To sum it up, one can say that he acts with a whole bunch of heart and not a lot of brain.

Sword; Yuuichirou is a pretty skilled swordsman. He was taught by Guren, who is one of the higher ranking generals in the Japanese Imperial Demon Army. He was able to take down one of the Four Horseman of John with just a sword.
Cursed Gear; Yuuichirou has the ability to wield what canon calls "cursed gear". A better way to explain cursed gear is that it is some sort of weapon possessed by a demon. Yuuichirou chooses a sword with the demon Asuramaru possessing it. Demonic weapons have the ability to slay vampires which is their main difference from a normal weapon. The cursed gear also strengthens the user and speeds up their healing time.
Seraph; Yuuichirou discovers through his contract with Asuramaru that at least 1/10th of him is not human. This is what is known as the Seraph gene. This part of him is what is being used by the Japanese Imperial Demon Army. When his Seraph gene is tapped into, Yuuichirou loses sense of himself and undergoes a painful transformation. He sprouts what looks like a wing on his upper left shoulder and his left eye goes dark and bleeds. He tries to kill any human nearby while calling them "sinners". This only happens when he takes a supplement provided by Guren and it takes an entire week for him to reawaken after this power is used.

What are some of the things people do around here when you've run out of things to do? I've given up located a place to get cleaned up. I've given up ever going anywhere back near the screaming catacombs- not worth it, I promise! So I want suggestions.
